Brian Hoyer will lead the offense and without Drew Stanton the general public will probably think the Spartans are facing a big dropoff. However Hoyer subbed a couple games for Stanton last season and had games of 330 yards passing against Minnesota and 291 at Penn State. He has a strong arm and can throw on the run, which has the coaches thinking he can be even better than Stanton was. Javon Ringer has potential. He suffered through a string of injuries in 2006, but still gained 497 yards on only 86 carries. The main pass catchers are going to be TJ Williams at wideout and Kellen Davis at tight end. The line was recruited for the gap blocking style they will be asked to run under new head coach Mark Dantonio's system so expect some growing pains there. Up front the team is expecting Ervin Baldwin to have a breakout year at end, and the tackle positions should be solid with the quick Justin Kershaw and the big Ogemdi Nwagbuo. There isn't an all-star in the middle of the defense, but Kaleb Thornhill and SiDarean Adams both have experience. The new staff thinks that the secondary is going to see the biggest improvements from last year's unit that was 97th in pass defense. Ross Weaver returns after missing last season and is a potential star to go along with the speedy Kendell Davis-Clark. The safeties are going to be heavy hitters which will give the secondary a little punch. It will be hard to go anywhere but up for the defense that gave up 28.4 ppg a year ago. Two home games offer the best chance for success in the Big Ten this season as both Northwestern and Indiana come to town at the beginning of October. The rest of the schedule is pretty brutal as they have one of the tougher sets of games in the conference. The good news is that non-conference games against UAB, Bowling Green, and Pittsburgh are all at home and give the Spartans a chance at some victories. Still don't expect a better showing than last year's 4-8 mark in 2007.
