Minnesota has been a run-oriented team in the past, but as Tim Brewster takes over as coach this season expect a lot more passing and excitement.  Tony Mortenson will be the man under center, but he doesn't have much experience.  Adam Weber is a freshman who could push Mortenson and start learning under fire if Minnesota struggles early.  Amir Pinnix and Jay Thomas are both talented runners that will get their fair share of carries.  Pinnix had 1,272 yards on only 252 carries last season even after starting the year off slowly.  The Gophers don't have a lot along the line or at wide receiver, which could cause problems.

The defensive line will be a strength of the team as Willie VanDeSteeg and his 10 sacks will be returning at end.  Neel Allen and Todd Meisel are both big returning tackles and Alex Daniels will get his shot at the other end spot.  At linebacker there is going to be more speed and athleticism on the field, which should help the group to make more plays on the whole.  To say the secondary is questionable would be an understatement.  The team ranked 117th against the pass and they don't have a lot of speed back there.  The bright spot is Dominic Jones at corner, but the other three spots have a lot of ground to make up.

Minnesota won there last three games of the regular season before blowing a 31-point lead to Texas Tech in the Insight Bowl.  This year though the team will most likely struggle to make a bowl, even though the non-conference schedule should slot in four easy victories.  The teams they could beat in Indiana and Northwestern are both on the road which will make the Gopher underdogs.  The best two home games are when Illinois comes into town in early November and the first Big Ten game on the schedule against the Purdue Boilermakers.
