2007 Mississippi State Basketball Predictions & Season Preview

Jimmy Boyd's 2007 Mississippi State basketball predictions and season preview shows a team that should progress from a year ago and be poised for a decent run in the NCAA tournament.  If you didn't know the Bulldogs won the SEC West last year with an 8-8 record, then rolled through to the NIT semifinal before losing to West Virginia.  The team returns a solid core and is looking for some of last year's freshman to make the jump in their sophomore season.  Rick Stansbury also thinks that the extended post-season will give the team experience in the win or go home format to enable them to make a run in the tournament.  We have to agree as we see this being a potential Sweet 16 team,

Charles Rhodes will be depended on down low, and he's going to have to show some more consistency than he gave a year ago if this team is going to repeat as SEC West champions.  After averaging nearly 14 points per game and six rebounds last year, he thought about making the move to the NBA, but didn't get good enough marks from the scouts.  Rhodes will look to Jarvis Varnado to give him some help this season.  Varnado wasn't bulky enough to endure through the long season as a freshman, but after putting on some muscle in the off-season a lot is going to be expected of him in the paint.  A couple of freshman will also have a chance to shine.  Kodi Augustus and Elgin Bailey are pretty big for youngsters and played against each other in Baton Rouge.

Jamont Gordon showed why he was one of the most dominate point guards in the SEC last year by scoring, rebounding, and getting the ball to his teammates.  He played over 32 minutes per game and added 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in that time on the floor.  Ben Hansbrough and Barry Stewart are a couple of sophomores that will have a bigger role on this year's squad.  Each one of these guys can extend the floor with their three-point shooting and seemed to get better as the season progressed.  There are some incoming freshman here with talent as well which should give the school some depth at the guard position.
