Jimmy Boyd's 2007 Mississippi State Bulldogs
football preview and predictions once again show a
team that will be near the bottom of the SEC West.

Michael Henig will have a chance to post some decent numbers
this year if he can stay healthy. After struggling with injuries, he improved
vastly from start to finish last season and will have a nice corps of receivers
to throw the ball to. Tony Burks is the senior everyone is talking about, but
Jamayel Smith and Lance Long will both make enough plays to keep teams from
zeroing in Burks. The offensive line returns four of five starters, so sophomore
Anthony Dixon wants to improve on his 688 yards a year ago and break the 1,000
yard mark.
Titus Brown and his 6.5 sacks from a year ago are about all the Bulldogs have
returning up front, which could cause problems in repeating their decent year
against the run last season. Middle linebacker Jamar Chaney is the leading
returning tackler with 66 and is the leader of the defense. The corners haven't
got a lot of experience but they are a speedy group the team is hoping can make
plays. Safeties Derek Pegues and Keith Fitzhugh may be playing new positions but
have been serviceable in the past.
Mississippi State is going to have a hard time getting past 4 wins this year,
and that is if they can either pull out an upset or beat their in-state rivals
from Ole Miss in the last game of
the season. Having to go to Kentucky
and South Carolina would
otherwise be the best chances for the Bulldogs to make a run at somebody.
It seems like Sylvestor Croom has had plenty of time to get this program turned
around without much luck in doing so. It's hard to see him keeping his job
if the team doesn't outperform expectations this season.
