2007 MLB Predictions

Our 2008 MLB Predictions are now posted!

Going into the 2007 season, the New York Yankees are once again the favorites to win the World Series at 7/2 odds followed by the Boston Red Sox at 6/1, the New York Mets at 15/2, the LA Dodgers at 9/1, and the Detroit Tigers at 9/1 odds. Although the Yankees have a great shot to win the American League East, this team does not have the pitching to capture a World Series title. If the Rocket follows Pettitte to the Bronx after the All-Star break, then maybe I’ll change my tune, but as is, the Chicago Whitesox and the Red Sox both have superior starting rotations with teams like the Twins and Blue Jays neck and neck with New York in the AL in terms of pitching.

After a down year in 2006, by the standards set by winning a World Series title, I like the Chicago White Sox to reemerge to represent the American League in the 2007 World Series. Chicago finished behind both Detroit and Minnesota in the AL Central last season and both of those teams will see just how hard it is to stay at the top this year. Minnesota has the Cy Young Award winner Santana, the Young Liriano, and a solid closer in Nathan and Detroit has Verlander and Robertson as a solid righty-lefty, one-two punch, but overall the Sox have a better starting rotation with Contreras, Garland, Buehrle, Vasquez and anyone else. I don’t mention Rogers for the Tigers because he overachieved last season. Contreras and Buehrle both underachieved for Chicago and I expect these guys to be back with their best stuff this year. This White Sox rotation is one that has been there before pitching in the tough playoff games so they know what it’s going to take. Both the Twins and the Tigers overachieved as far as power numbers go from their hitters so when you combine the best pitching staff in the American League with the best lineup in the AL Central, we have ourselves a legitimate World Series contender. For you futures bettors out there, you can bet the White Sox at 10/1 odds to win the 2007 World Series.

In the other league, which gets no respect, the St. Louis Cardinals came out of nowhere to win the 2006 World Series. The previous season, the Cardinals finished with 100 regular season wins which was the best regular season record in baseball, but they didn’t even make it to the Series. Last season, the Cardinals finished with just an 83-78 record which was by far the worst record of any division winner in 2006. We knew, based on the previous season, that this team had the capabilities of making a postseason run, but it was hard to think that it would happen in 2006 with the way the Cards performed down the stretch of the regular season. With the bulk of the roster still the same from the Cardinals’ 2005 and 2006 teams and with the NL presenting weaker competition on the whole than the AL, we can once again expect the Cardinals to be among the top National League teams. The Mets could be a one and done team, speaking of last year’s breakout season, because of their lack of pitching depth and the Cubs made some great off season moves, but I’ll have to see it before I can believe it. Both the Cubs and the Mets are favored over the Cardinals to win the 2007 World Series as well as the Phillies and the Dodgers in the National League. But even though it’s tough to make a trip to the World Series in back-to-back years, the Cardinals have made it two of the last three seasons, and I think they have the best chance to represent the NL again in 2007. I chalk up last season’s World Series victory to the experience it gained in the World Series in 2004 and the disappointment it endured with an early exit from the playoffs in 2005. No other NL team has this kind of experience. If you like the Cards in 2007, you can bet them at 12/1 odds.

All in all, I think the American League takes back the World Series title in 2007. So I’m going with the Chicago White Sox because they have the deepest pitching staff in baseball, and they will be hungry in 2007 after a let down year in 2006.
