2007 Nextel Open Predictions

Even if you’re a long shot lover, you really can’t look too much further than the favorites in this Saturday’s Nextel Open. Jimmy Boyd’s Nextel Open predictions will help you bring home a winner at Lowe’s Motor Speedway this weekend.

Clint Bowyer is showing slightly better value at 4/1 odds than race favorite Carl Edwards despite Bowyer being ahead of Edwards on the Nascar points list. This will instantly have Bowyer backers licking their chops. The reason Bowyer is not the odds on favorite is because he is yet to win a Nextel race while Edwards has four career wins and Edwards also has a much better race history at Lowe's. This plays in our favor as we pick up a little better value. He has the same finishing average of 16th as Edwards, but his five top tens and one pole are all you need to see to know that he has out driven Edwards this year. One stat you may not see is that Bowyer has led in five races this season for a total of 21 laps which shatters Edwards’ two leads. This lets us know without a doubt that we are backing the better driver. Bowyer has been charging and looks more like a championship contended than even his teammate Kevin Harvick does. If Boyer takes the checkered flag in the Open, I like him to finish better than Harvick in the All-Star challenge.

The only thing that makes me take a second look at Carl Edwards is his track record at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. He has two top five finishes and four top tens at Lowe’s with an average finishing placement of sixth. He has led in three of his four Lowe’s Motor Speedway races for a total of 33 laps. Edwards has had less than perfect cars in 2007, which may be some of the reason why he is below Bowyer in the standings, but he has driven those cars successfully at three similar tracks. Edwards has two third place finishes at Lowe’s which makes him a steady consistent driver in my mind, but perhaps not aggressive enough to come away with a checkered flag.

Bowyer has limited track time at Lowe’s Motor Speedway with 19th and 23rd place finishes. Edwards' track record at Lowe’s makes this one look not even close, but we have to gage how this season has gone into our prediction as well. Bowyer has been the better driver in 2007 with better cars and his surge of late leads us to believe that he will stroll down victory lane in the Nextel Open this Saturday.
