2007 Dallas Cowboys NFL Draft Predictions

Now you can read our 2008 Dallas Cowboys NFL season predictions!

With Bill Parcells now retired, the Dallas Cowboys' plans for the draft could change dramatically. Parcells did rebuild the Cowboys' defense that had kept them out of the playoffs for consecutive years. His 2005 draft yielded three players that initially seemed like cornerstones. DeMarcus Ware, Marcus Spears and Chris Canty all contributed to the Cowboys' success coming out of the 2005 draft. By the end of last season, Spears looked like a bust and Canty played like the fourth-round pick he was and not like the draft-day bargain he appeared. Ware lived up to expectations but does not fit the 3-4 scheme well. He was dropping back into pass coverage instead of rushing the quarterback where he is at his best.

New head coach Wade Phillips has to decide if he wants to stick to the 3-4 or change to a 4-3. Their draft selections will be based off of that decision. Regardless, the Cowboys a defensive end that can put pressure on the quarterback as their wasn't much heat on the opposing play-callers in 2006. They also need help at nose tackle with Jason Ferguson on the back end of his career.

The Cowboys have always made it a point to draft offensive linemen every year and will again in 2007 after a miserable season protecting the quarterback. Tony Romo has great feet, but they don't want him running around more than he has to. Guard Marco Rivera faces back surgery and tackle Flozell Adams is up in years. It's a good possibility Dallas will invest their 22nd pick in a linemen, possibly a guard.

Teams have been reluctant to select guards in the first round in recent years, taking just four in the last five drafts combined. Auburn's Ben Grubbs, an athletic big man who soared up draft boards with an impressive week of practice at the Senior Bowl, might be a perfect fit in Dallas. This is if Phillips and Jerry Jones decide to take a chance on one of the least-glamorous positions in the league.

Dallas seems to be on the lookout for a free safety in recent years and 2007 is no different. Roy Williams needs some help in the secondary as his pass coverage is improving, but is still his biggest weakness. LSU's Laron Landry will likely be gone, so Dallas has to turn to Florida's Reggie Nelson if he is still available and if the Cowboys want to go in the direction of a free safety in the first round. If they wait to address the position in later rounds, talk has been saying that Utah's versatile Eric Weddle could be an option.

The Cowboys will likely look for insurance for Tony Romo on draft day. They don't have a proven back-up and will be looking for another young arm at a bargain. With possible new schemes in the Cowboy's offense and defense after Parcells' departure, Wade Phillips is going to draft accordingly. Offensive line and free safety are their most apparent needs. Look for one of those two positions to be the Cowboys' first-round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft.
