Draft Review
As we all expected the Oakland Raiders went after a quarterback and selected
JaMarcus Russell with the first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Russell is the best
quarterback in this class, but he does not appear to be the Raiders’ savior. His
“rawness” will leave him susceptible to sacks, turnovers, and poor reads.
Standing behind a suspect offensive line will not help him become a more
technically sound passer as he figures to be running for his life from week 1
on. With Russell’s tendency to hang on to the ball too long, expect blitzes to
come at him fast and furious. I think this guy has a chance to be a decent pro,
but not a star.
The Detroit Lions cannot
resist taking wide receivers so they took another one this season with the
second pick in the draft selecting Georgia Tech’s Calvin Johnson. I can’t
say I blame them. Honestly, Oakland probably should have snatched this
egoless, hardworking, talented speedster number one. This guy excelled in
college despite not having a prolific passer getting him the ball. I believe
Johnson does not rest until he is a star in the NFL. Scouts are really
digging when the only criticism on this guy is that he doesn’t come back to
the football well. Get ready to see the next great receiver in the National
Football League.
Joe Thomas goes to the Browns number three to be the focal point of their
running attack. This guy is my favorite top 10 pick because he is the surest
bet. With this guy, you are getting athleticism, footwork, and a powerful
initial punch off the line. He specializes in run blocking which makes him
an attractive pick for the Browns who are looking to establish a top notch
running game. I wanted to see Oakland go with this guy to enhance its
running attack. The Browns have got themselves a perennial Pro Bowler.
What were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers thinking? Clemson’s Gaines Adams will now
be John Gruden’s premier pass rusher. I’m surprised the Bucs went with a
defensive pick this high when defense is the least of the Bucs’ problems.
Last season, Tampa Bay had a harder time scoring than a pimple-faced
16-year-old with headgear. The Bucs were very big on Adrian Peterson and
with Calvin Johnson going number two, one would have thought the Bucs would
go with him. Adams is not the most complete player, but he is definitely
talented and has a better upside than last year’s number one pick Mario
Williams. Perhaps, this is the Bucs’ attempt to compete with the Saints’
passing attack. I’m not sure this one pays off.
Arizona was hoping that Joe Thomas would fall into its lap, but the Cards
get offensive tackle Levi Brown from Penn State in stead to try to fill one
of their holes on the line. The biggest knock on this guy is that he takes
too many plays off. This is not something than you want to be on the
scouting report of your top five pick. This is when a team with a need
causes them to try to fill that need in stead of taking the best available
player. Brown is a horse, but he has also battled with weight and
conditioning. He was an underachiever in college and he will be in the NFL
as well.
