2007 Ole Miss NCAA Basketball Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on November 24, 2007

Jimmy Boyd’s 2007 Ole Miss season preview and NCAA basketball predictions shows the team taking a step back from last year’s squad who tied Mississippi State for a share of the SEC West crown. The team lost their three top players in Todd Abernethy, Bam Doyne, and Clarence Sanders. While the incoming group of freshman has more talent than those three, the lack of experience will more than likely leave this team in a worse off position, at least for this year. Rebels fans though should be excited about the possibilities for the future, it’s just that this is going to be a rebuilding year.

The front court does have some experience. Dwayne Curtis and Jermey Parnell are both seniors who have played significant minutes in the past and should be capable of solid contributions this year. Both of them have lost weight so they can get up and down the floor better. Curtis is counted on more for his scoring and should improve on the 12.2 ppg he averaged a year ago. Parnell is intimidating in the paint and will be solid defending down low. Kenny Williams is more of a defensive threat, but he did increase his scoring at the end of the last season. There is depth with Malcolm White coming in and junior college transfer Wesley Jones.

There isn’t much experience at all in the back court. Chris Warren and Trevor Gaskins are both freshman who will be competing for the starting point guard spot. At shooting guard there is sophomore Eniel Polynice and freshman Zach Graham with Brian Smith being able to back both positions up. David Huertas comes over from Florida and can shoot outside. He should be a nice threat to score out of the backcourt. With all of this talent in the backcourt there should be some intense practices in which everyone challenges the others to step up. The depth and competition should help everyone get better faster, and we see this team being significantly better by the end of the season.
