Oregon has had a few quarterbacks who stepped up in their season
seasons to earn top draft statuses, including Joey Harrington and Akili Smith.
The Ducks are hoping for the same out of Dennis Dixon, who has had problems with
interceptions and has been inconsistent at best. He'll be helped out by a
solid running game led by junior Jonathan Stewart. Stewart should get over
1,000 barring injury and splitting too much time with another talented back in
Jeremiah Johnson. At receiver Jaison Williams and Garren Strong both have
talent, but Williams has problems staying focuses and Strong can't stay healthy
enough to shine on the field.
The defense struggled to stop the run, and the front seven is
going to be expected to step up after the weak effort a year ago. Getting
Victor Filipe back from injury will be helpful, as will the experience at
tackle. The linebacking corps wasn't free to make plays last year, so
there dependability relies a lot on the front four doing a better job of eating
up blockers this year. The secondary lead the Pac-10 in pass defense a
year ago and was ranked 20th nationally. Three of the four starters from a
year ago return and are lead by one of the best safeties in the nation, Patrick
Chung. If the front four can get some rush on the passer their numbers
should only improve on last season's.
Last year the Ducks were 7-6 overall and 4-5 in Pac-10 play,
losing their last four games. The schedule in 2007 doesn't look to be any
easier and features games at Michigan
and UCLA, then home stands against the two
best in the conference, California
and USC. The team will be slight
underdogs when they go to Arizona
State and when they take on Oregon
State at home, but should be favored to win a close game at home against
Arizona. These are the three
games that will decide Oregon's season, winning two out of those three will most
likely put them into a bowl, but if we are right and they end up 6-6 then the
team will miss out on post-season play.
