2007 Oregon State Basketball Preview & Predictions
This is it for head coach Jay John. If
the Beavers don’t produce a winning season, athletic
director Bob De Carolis will more than likely show him
the door. Find out if Jay John can show progress in his
sixth season in Corvallis in this 2007 Oregon State
Beavers predictions and season preview.

The Beavers finished just 11-21 overall in 2006-07 and were just 3-15 in
the Pac-10. By our estimation, the Beavers will finish in the Pac-10
basement and Jay John will be looking for work. The Beavers have only
made a postseason appearance in 1 of the past 16 seasons just to show
you the kind of rebuilding project that any coach would be up against.
The fact that five players with eligibility are out for numerous reasons
makes this season even more challenging. Of course, these guys really
weren’t that good anyway, but it’s always difficult to win with youth,
especially when it isn’t blue chip talent.
Marcel Jones is one player who you will be seeing in the NBA. The 6’8’’
Jones averaged 15.3ppg last season despite facing numerous defenses
designed to stop him. If he can improve his free throw shooting (a
horrid 54.3% last season), he could be a 20ppg scorer this season.
Junior C.J. Giles could be Jones’ biggest help. The 6’11’’ Kansas
transfer, will be eligible December 8th. His off the court issues forced
him out of Kansas, but he has vowed maturity and is looking for a fresh
start in Corvallis. Some feel he is a potential lottery pick. I wouldn’t
go that far, but he is definitely a player with NBA potential.
Point guard Josh Tarver is not great, but he showed steady progress as a
freshman averaging 3.8apg. His 22% three point shooting last season was
unacceptable. Josh’s brother, Seth Tarver, was the best Oregon high
school player in 2006. He had a rocky rookie season, but will hopefully
fill the number two guard spot this year.
A soft non-conference schedule has Oregon State off to a 3-3 start and
it should allow the Beavers to best their 11 wins last season, but not
by much. The Pac-10 is very strong this season with seven potential NCAA
Tourney teams. We don’t see the Beavers finishing better than ninth and
likely finding the cellar.
