Last year the Beavers got off to a rough start by losing three of their first five games, but finished the season strong including a win over the USC Trojans.  Can Oregon State improve on their 10-4 record and 6-3 conference mark from a year ago?  It should be tough as we see them getting eight or nine wins.  They have to go to the California Bears and at USC which the team will be heavy underdogs.  The games which should provide the true test and decide how successful the season is going to be will be when the UCLA Bruins come to town on September 29th and when the team travels to the their in-state rivals, the Oregon Ducks, for the last game of the regular season.  A couple of big wins there and a major bowl will be in the works, but a top 25 finish seems probable.

The offense will be led by the Pac-10's best all around runner in Yvenson Bernard.  Bernard ran for 1,307 yards and 12 TDs a year ago, and has four of the five offensive lineman from a year ago returning.  This should be a real strength of Mike Riley's team.  At quarterback a couple of sophomores will split time.  Shane Canfield is the drop back passer while Lyle Moevao provides a more athletic look.  Canfield will have a nice pair to throw to with Sammie Stroughter catching 74 passes for 1,293 yards a year ago and Brandon Powers who had 39 catches himself.

The defense should be alright if they can get to the backfield like they did last season when leading the nation with 107 tackles for losses, which included 47 sacks.  Riley thinks the front seven can be even better this year with Curtis Coker and Jeff Van Orsow returning on the line and all three starting linebackers entering their senior campaign.  The secondary has three of four starters returning and should improve on the number of yards they gave up a year ago.
