Southern Miss came into this season with high expectations of winning Conference USA and making a bigger bowl, but injuries plagued the team throughout the season and forced them to lose more games than they should have. Three home losses hurt the Eagles, but the team did go 4-0 in conference road games and beat up UAB on Legion Field, which is where this bowl will be played. After 17 seasons as head coach of the program, and bowl appearances in 10 of the last 11 seasons, Jeff Bower has decided to step down after this game. That should provide a little extra motivation for this Southern Miss team that will want to send the program’s leader out on a positive note. With quarterback Jeremy Young back to full strength and wide receiver Chris Johnson back from injury, the team should be able to give the nation’s 14th ranked rusher Damion Fletcher a little help on offense. If they can move the ball effectively, then this defense can shut down the opposition. Southern Miss lead the conference in both points and yards allowed.
Cincinnati may be disappointed to be playing in such an early bowl game after going through the difficult Big East conference and finishing the year 9-3, but head coach Brian Kelly is an excellent motivator. However, the team may look a little sluggish from feeling sorry for themselves, or they may come out hungry gunning for the school’s first double digit win total since the 1951 season. This team is very talented though and should be able to challenge the Eagles defense. Ben Mauk has came into his own as the quarterback, guiding the Bearcat offense up and down the field on the way to averaging nearly 37 ppg, up from 21.1 ppg a year ago. His 154.6 quarterback rating is impressive, as is the fact that it lead the Big East with the likes of Brian Brohm out of Louisville and Pat White from West Virginia in the league. Southern Miss may be talented at running the ball, but the Bearcats have the 15th ranked rushing defense and held all but two teams under 100 yards on the ground this season. It’s going to be tough to score on Cincinnati since they are only averaging 18.6 ppg against in 2007.
Oddsmakers predicted score:
Cincinnati Bearcats 33
Southern Miss Golden Eagles 22
2007 PapaJohns.com Odds:
Cincinnati Bearcats -11
Southern Miss Golden Eagles +11
Total set at 56
