Last season, Penn State went 11-19, only won two Big Ten games, and went 0-10 on the road. It was not the kind of season that head coach Ed DeChellis wanted to have after getting a contract extension. DeChellis has four returning starters to fall back on this season. He is hoping that this nucleus can turn some heads. Senior swingman Geary Claxton and power forward Jamelle Cornley are both proven All-Conference performers. Penn State will suffer from a lack of depth this season and inexperience. Nearly half of the roster will be making its debut as Lions.

Cornley is Penn State’s front court. He is a former Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He stands just 6’5’’ but his size does not stop him from being one of the best on the board in the league. A painful hip pointer slowed him last season, but he was still able to finish second on the team in scoring and rebounding. I’m expecting a strong junior campaign for him now that he’s healthy.

Claxton will be expected to put this team on his back as a senior. He finished second in the Big Ten in rebounding last season with 8.0 per game and fifth in scoring with 16.3 points per game. Mike Walker figures to be a solid senior guard who can make plays and takes care of the basketball. Walker showed us a major glimpse of his ability to shoot the basketball by making seven threes against Illinois is last year’s Big Ten Conference Tournament. A pair of juco transfers will add more depth.

Despite Penn State adding depth and athletic ability, It will not translate into a postseason caliber team. I don’t see Penn State winning more than four Big Ten games and more road struggles are imminent. DeChellis’ grace period is ending and he is going to start taking some heat if he can’t start to show some improvement.

Going against the Nittany Lions is Big Ten play on the road figures to be a solid play this season.
