2007 Providence Basketball Predictions & Season
Preview
2007 Providence Friars predictions and
season preview will help you beat the odds in the
Big East Conference this year. Hopes are high for coach
Tim Welsh’s team who finished last season 18-13, going
down in the first round of the NIT. Despite losing
All-Big East center Herbert Hill and his 18.1 points per
game and 8.8 rebounds per game, popular opinion is that
Providence will be dancing come March.

Providence could have been dancing last season if it didn’t lead the Big East in
turnovers almost 17 per game. With an extra emphasis on taking care of the rock
instated, Providence should instantly improve. If Geoff McDermott can stay
healthy, Providence will instantly recuperate the loss of Hill. Before McDermott
went down last season, he was averaging 11.7ppg and 10.2 rpg, leading the
conference in assists and rebounds. Providence is expecting big things from
Jonathan Kale as well. The 6’8’’, 250-pound junior made huge a stride from his
freshman to sophomore year and we expect another jump here. Forward Randall
Hanke brings a nice scoring boost to this team as well. He averaged 13ppg last
season.
The Friars have the luxury of returning their starting backcourt. Point guard
Sharaud Curry and shooting guard Weyinmi Efejuku will need to take better care
of the basketball though. Both players are two-year starters now and have no
excuse for catching the turnover bug this season. Curry averaged 15.3ppg and
4.4apg. Efejuku averaged 14.1ppg last season and scored 20 or more points eight
times. He should emerge as Providence’s number one scoring option. Jeff Xavier,
a transfer from Manhattan, provides some added backcourt depth. Dwain Williams
and Brian McKenzie will see minutes as well.
The Friars have made just two trips to the NCAA Tourney in Welsh’s eight years
at Providence. We feel he gets number three this season. Cutting down on
turnovers will instantly makes this team more deadly. If you’re looking for your
sleeper bet to win the Big East, this is it. Get them showing great value at any
