2007 Red Sox Angels Predictions

The Halos head to Bean Town Wednesday to take on the Red Sox in game 1 of their playoff series. LA captured its third AL West title in four years thanks to stellar starting pitching and a couple big name sluggers. John Lackey won 19 games for the Halos, Kelvim Escobar added 18 and Jered Weaver, last season’s rookie sensation, won 13. Vlad Guerrero provides most of the Angels' offense and aggressive baserunning brings a little National League wrinkle to this team that the Sox will have to be ready for.

The Red Sox were not getting the job done in the pitching department in 2006 so they signed a Japanese super star, left Papelbon in the pen, and the rest was history. Josh Beckett is a legit Cy Young Award candidate every year, and Curt Schilling brings unmatched playoff experience and toughness to the table.

Vlad Guerrero will once again finish in the top five in AL MVP voting behind a 125 RBI season. He and Lackey should be the difference makers for the Halos. Lackey has struggled against Boston in his career, however, going just 1-6 with a 6.27 ERA in 11 career starts against the Sox. He is just 1-4 at Fenway where he will start game 1.

David Ortiz, also know as Big Papi, will be one of the Red Sox’ s difference makers. You might see him have big success in late innings because the Halos have just one left-handed reliever. Ortiz, despite injuries, hit 35 bombs and drove in 117 runs. Mike Lowell enters the postseason off the best offensive campaign of his career. His 120 RBIs were huge for the Sox this season.

If Boston wants to win this series, they are going to have to win the battle against Maicer Izturis. This guy hit .406 with ducks on the pond this season.

The Red Sox’s unlikely hero just might be the guy whose name sounds like my favorite cereal- Coco Crisp. Crisp is an LA native and has always hit well in Tinsel Town as evidenced by his .357 average at Angel Stadium.

If the Angels are going to win this series, they are going to have to do it on the mound which has been their bread and butter all season a long. The Sox did defend better, and score more than LA this season, but the Angel’s aggressiveness on the bases makes them a tough out in any series, especially a short 5-gamer. If the Angels win this, Garret Anderson will have had to of come up huge.

The Red Sox went from one of the worst to one of the best starting rotations in the AL in just one season. If Manny can be effective despite his strained oblique, the Red Sox should have the advantage at home.

This series is a must-see as two division champions go head-to-head.
