2007 Red Sox Indians Predictions

The Boston Red Sox made quick work of the Angels in the outfield to advance to the American League Championship Series. The Cleveland Indians had a relatively easy go of it against the New York Yankees, beating them 3 games to 1 to advance. Now the AL Central champs take on the AL East champs for a trip to the World Series.

Boston fans are breathing easier now that the Yankees are out of the picture. Boston also took care of business against the Indians in the regular season winning 5 of 7 games. With that in mind, it would appear that the Red Sox should have the edge here, especially with the fact that the Red Sox have home field. However, hadn’t the Yankees won all six regular season meetings with the Red Sox before the postseason began? Cleveland does have the slight edge in the starting pitching department with C.C. Sabathia, Fausto Carmona, Jake Westbrook, and Paul Byrd. And don’t be surprised if Sabathia and Carmona both get moved up.

Offensively, the Red Sox get the slight advantage. The Indians’ conglomeration of solid hitters was a nice regular season weapon, but Manny Ramirez and Big Papi, proven postseason heroes, give Bean Town the advantage in this department.

The Red Sox also get the nod in terms or experience as this is the first go around for most of these Indians players. However, the Yankees had the huge advantage in this department as well and look how far it got them. By the same token, the Yankees also do not have the same caliber of starting pitching. Beckett and Schilling are as good as they get. These guys are going to have to pitch well late into games though as the Sox’s pen has not been solidified or consistent.

Ultimately, because of home field and the fact that the core of this Boston team has done this before, I have to give the Red Sox the advantage in the series. But I expect this thing to be very close. Don’t be surprised if Cleveland heads back home having stole one of the first two games on the road.

There was no better MLB handicapper in the regular season than Jimmy Boyd and thus far, no one has been better in the postseason either. Continue to crush your book with Jimmy’s ALCS picks. If you’re not playing with Jimmy, you’re probably not winning.
