2007 Rockies Phillies Predictions

The Rockies got past the favored Padres by the skin of their teeth to win the NL Wild Card, making their way into the postseason to take on the Philadelphia Phillies who caught the Mets in the NL East.

Both of these squads looked like improbable playoff teams just weeks ago, but now they will start their quest for a World Series ring.

When it comes to starting pitching the Phillies are going to have the edge. They are more rested and Cole Hamels is spectacular. His ability to go twice in a 5-game series could be huge for the Phillies. Jeff Francis, Colorado’s 17-game winner, will look to build on the best season of his career in the playoffs.

Offensively, I see this one as a toss up. Both teams pack plenty of speed and power. Matt Holiday and Ryan Howard are sure to produce some fireworks. The Phillies have more names you have heard of, like Utley and Rollins, but you’ll learn a few new ones from Colorado in this series.

Defensively, the edge goes to Colorado. They are the best in the National League defensively. It is a huge reason why they are at this point as starting pitching hasn’t always been there, but the defense has backed them up consistently.

What could be the difference makers for each team you ask? Well, the Rockies have a better bullpen, but the Phillies have a better bench. We’ll see who wins this battle in any close late inning games.

This series is going to be a slugfest. Whichever teams can do the best job of defusing the others offense will prevail. Philly will likely do it with pitching while the Rocks will continue to play defense.

One would think that Philly would have the edge getting the home field advantage. But the Phillies need to be careful as they are throwing out several indicators that they are just happy to make the postseason. The Rockies mean business, as evidenced by their 14-1 run to make the postseason. The hottest teams down the stretch often do the most damage.

The Phillies are a -145 favorite at Bodog for game one of this series. Sign up for an account and bet with Jimmy Boyd, the 2007 MLB Handicapping Champion, throughout the playoffs.
