2007 Rutgers Scarlet Knights Football Preview & Predictions

You'll be in for a surprise if you think Jimmy Boyd's 2007 Rutgers Scarlet Knights football preview and predictions would show a team that is going to disappoint after a surprising 2006 run.  Last year the team was a triple overtime loss to West Virginia in their final game of the season away from winning the Big East, and the pieces are there for another big run at a major BCS Bowl.  The two games that the team should be worried about are the Mountaineers at the end of October and the finale when they have to travel to Louisville to take on the Cardinals.

Mike Teel has come in and piled up a 13-3 record as the starting quarterback, but he did have 13 picks to only 12 touchdowns last year.  Expect those numbers to improve in his junior season especially after he played at the end of the year.  The team's real leader though is in the backfield with Ray Rice.  This guy will be yet another Big East player vying for the Heisman after running for 1,794 yards and 20 touchdowns a year ago.  The scary part is that he is only a junior and should be ready for bigger things this year.  The line gave up only eight sacks a year ago, and opened some big holes for Rice.  The team returns three of those starters but the other two spots will most likely be filled with underclassmen.

Defensively the team shouldn't have any problems at all if they can find a way to replace a couple linebackers.  This team was 4th in yards allowed at 252 ypg a year ago and 14.3 ppg finished the team in 8th nationally.  The front four is set with All-American beast Eric Foster at tackle and with Jamaal Westerman and George Johnson holding down the end spots.  Westerman had eight sacks a year ago.  Linebacker is the position the team lost the most, but it's also were head coach Greg Shiano has focused with eight solid recruits the last two years.  We think this means someone will easily step up.  The secondary will be tough once again with All-Big East safeties in Courtney Greene and Ron Girault.  There is plenty of talent on the backside of the defense, so throwing against the Scarlet Knights will be tough once again.
