2007 SEC College Basketball Picks & Predictions
When taking a look at Jimmy Boyd’s 2007 SEC basketball preview and NCAA basketball predictions there are going to be people who think that this conference is down since the names on top will be Tennesee, Mississippi State, and Alabama instead of Kentucky and Florida like is usual. Don’t worry though as this conference is going to be deep as ever and loaded with talented guys like Shan Foster, Chris Lofton, Jamont Gordon, and Ronald Steele. You’ll see quite a few of these teams make the NCAA tournament, and at least one of them will be a force in the Elite Eight at worst.
East:
Our favorite out East is Tennessee. This is far and away the most talented club in the conference as Bruce Pearl has loads of talent and the energy level high for the men’s team for a change. Expect this team to contend for a national title.
Even without Tubby Smith, Kentucky is going to be a force in the East. Billy Gillespie takes over the team and expectations are high, he’ll have a talented backcourt and if someone can step up down low this squad could surprise people.
Billy Donovan left Florida during the off-season only to return a few weeks later. He won’t have the NBA talent that took off after a second national title, but he’ll have top tier talent to start a new era.
Vanderbilt has Shan Foster to lead the Commodores in his senior year, and AJ Ogilvy will try to make an immediate impact at center, but this team isn’t ready for the elite of the league.
Dennis Felton is running out of time to turn around the Georgia Bulldogs, and this year will be another one in which the team won’t hear their name called on Selection Sunday.
South Carolina has seemed to make a living out of performing well in the NIT, but it will be tough for the Gamecocks to even make the post-season with this group of guys.
West:
We are big on sophomore Patrick Beverley, and the Razorback fans will be too when he leads Arkansas to the SEC West crown.
Mississippi State is going to surprise some people because Jamont Gordon and Charles Rhodes are a good enough 1-2 combo to compete with almost anyone in the nation.
If Ronald Steele can stay healthy and get back to full strength, then you’ll see the Alabama Rolling Tide make a run at this side of the league’s crown.
Don’t count the Auburn Tigers out quite yet, but we don’t really think that they’ll finish in the top half of the conference.
What has happened to the LSU Tigers? After dominating the NCAA tournament two years ago this team fell off the map last year. This year the team will have even less talent and will most likely miss the post-season.
Ole Miss lost a lot of quality talent from a year ago so we fully expect this to be a rebuilding year as they end up with the league’s worst record.
