2007 South Carolina Basketball Picks & Predictions
2007 South Carolina basketball predictions and season preview from Jimmy Boyd will help you get your season of college basketball betting off to a fast start. Head coach Dave Odom is entering his seventh season as head coach and if things don’t improve this will more than likely be his last. The Gamecocks finished last in the SEC East going 4-12, losing 14 of their last 18 games, and going only 10-7 on their home floor. We don’t see this team making the NCAA tournament, and it would be a surprise to see them back in the NIT that they have dominated the last few years (2 titles and a runner-up finish).
The Gamecocks are going to have a real force down low, and that has been a problem over the last several years. Dominque Archie is 6’7″, which is a little small for the power forward spot, but he did a decent job last year averaging 8.8 ppg and 5.0 rebounds per game as a redshirt freshman. Chad Gray is a 6’7″ sophomore who struggled with injuries last year, but the team is counting on him to step it up this year. The incoming freshman are going to be counted on to help in the front court, but the problem is that young players rarely have the size to come in and make an immediate impact in a conference like the SEC. Mitchell Carter is the only real player with size down low, but he’s a little raw and will need to develop before seeing any time on the floor.
South Carolina has a pair of transfers coming in to help the backcourt. Devan Downey was a former Big East All-Rookie standout at Cincinnati and Zam Frederick comes over from Georgia Tech. These two are really fast and should push the tempo up as fast as possible. A couple of additional sophomores will play a big role in Brandis Raley-Ross and Evaldas Baniulis, giving the Gamecocks some depth. It’s going to be interesting to see just how these four gel together during the year. If they play up to expectations then the team could possibly make the post-season, but we aren’t going to count on it.
