If a 16-15 season is a success story, you know you’re program is rebuilding. St. John’s went 7-9 in the Big East and advanced to the Big East Tournament for the first time since 2003. With only two returning starters and seven incoming freshman, the Johnnies could take a step back.

The Red Storm backcourt will be headed up by Anothony Mason Jr. He is the only returning frontcourt starter for the Storm. He averaged 11.9 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game-very solid numbers, especially in one of the nation’s toughest conferences. But coaches feel this kid has not yet reached his potential. After losing 6’10’’ Lamont Hamilton and his 13.4 points per game, head coach Norm Roberts is looking to freshman Justin Burrell to step in and start immediately. He also brought in 6’10’’ 280-pound load Dele Coker to bolster the frontline.

As far as the backcourt goes, senior Eugene Lawrence led the Big East in assists last season, and Roberts feels he will be more effective playing less minutes if they can find an adequate backup. Roberts will likely play Freshman Malik Boothe alongside his point guard. Boothe brings rare quickness and a knack for getting to the basket to the mix. Sophomore Larry Wright and a trio of freshman will give the Johnnies depth, but these youngsters need polishing.

Roberts has already eluded to the fact that his team could take a step back this season, but he dangles seven top recruits to Red Storm fans with the promise that this team will contend the next few years. Even UConn found out last season that this is a tough league to win in with mostly freshman and sophomores. A realistic goal is the .500 mark for this team and another trip to the Big East tourney. That should be enough to get this young team to the NIT. Two years from now, Roberts could have himself an upper third Big East squad.

St. John’s is talented enough to sneak up on some of the Big East’s elite, playing them closer than expected. We’ll look to take the points with our college basketball picks on the Red Storm in the right spots as home underdogs.
