2007 St. Jude Predictions

The Stanford St. Jude Championship tees off June 7th at the TPC at Southwind in Memphis Tennessee. After a week when some of the tours smaller names put up very small numbers to best Woods, Singh, and Els, we’ll see if the tours top dogs will bounce back this week in the last event before the U.S. Open. Jeff Maggert is the defending champion at this event. He didn’t play in last week’s Memorial Tournament but played well in the Crowne Plaza Invitational tying for 12th win three rounds under 70. However, Maggert has no top 10 finishes in 2007 and five out of the top 100 in which he finished out of the money. I don’t think we’ll see Maggert repeating in the St. Jude Championship.

The odds won’t be in our favor with the favorites, but I expect Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, and Adam Scott to all three play very well. Scott tied for fifth and Singh shot nine under at the Memorial which was good for a tie for 15th. Furyk shot a respectable seven under for the tournament. I expect all three players to build off solid performances to show very well in the preceding tournament to the Open.

This tournaments elevated six million dollar purse has made it one of the bigger payoff stops on the tour and will be sure to have players shelling out their best efforts to go after the top prize.

One player you’re going to want to take a serious look at is Phil Mickelson. He withdrew from last week’s event and hasn’t played since winning The Players Championship. Prior to that win he recorded back-to-back third place finishes in the Byron Nelson and Wachovia Championships. I don’t expect the delay to put any rust on his swing. Phil should be sharp this week.

David Toms should get some serious consideration from bettors as well. He has four top 10 finishes this year and he is a two-time winner of this tournament earning back-to-back championships in 2003 and 2004. I think he has a good showing in 2007, but likely not a championship caliber weekend.

This tournament has eluded big name players for the most part this decade, but with it being moved up to the weekend before the U.S. Open and with a bigger purse, we can expect the top dogs on the tour to make a major push this weekend. The field should be very worried about Lefty, especially with Tiger Woods not in the mix this week. Until he gets knocked off his horse, we really can’t go with another golfer. We rode Phil in The Players and we’ll ride him again this week.
