2007 Syracuse Orange Football Preview & Predictions

If you are looking for a good team, you aren't going to find one by reading Jimmy Boyd's 2007 Syracuse Orange football preview and predictions article.  Greg Robinson enters his third season as head coach and he's still trying to get the talent he needs to compete in the Big East.  The problem he faces is that this conference has turned the corner and has talented teams deeper and deeper into the standings.  Looking at the schedule you'll see a trip to Iowa then a conference lineup that starts with Louisville, West Virginia, and Rutgers.  Not only do we think those are the three best teams in the league, but getting blown out early in the year kind of zaps the squad of any confidence it may have had coming in.  If this team wins four games like last year it would be a great success.

The offense managed only 264 ypg last year, scoring 17.4 ppg along the way.  Those numbers put Syracuse at 110th and 102nd in the nation respectively.  We guess it can't get much worse than that for this group, especially with a quarterback who can actually make the West Coast offense work in sophomore Andrew Robinson.  At tailback the team has Curtis Brinkley, but he's had problems staying healthy on two troubled knees.  The offensive line though has had plenty of problems with opening up holes for running backs or protecting the quarterback, so even though there is a decent stable of receivers for Robinson to get the ball to, he might not have time to put it on the mark.

Defensively it didn't get much better as the team ranked 110th in run defense by giving up 185 ypg and allowing the opposition 399.3 ypg of total offense.  That was good for 110th and 107th place nationally.  The line does boast last year's conference leader in sacks as Jameel McClain racked up 9.5 from the end spot.  Tackle Tony Jenkins is talented as well with 8.5 tackles for loss and is quick for his size.  There is depth here as the other players have experience and are talented enough to not drop off the talent level too much when the stars need a breather.  Linebacker is a concern with three new starters, little to no experience, and not a lot of speed.  In the secondary the safety spots are secure with Joe Fields and Dowayne Davis being above average, but the corner spot is a real glaring weakness that the opposition will most likely exploit.
