Erik Ainge's height and pin point accuracy have some pegging him
for a future in the NFL, and after completing 67% of his passes a year ago it's
easy to see why. When Ainge performs well so do the Vols as evidenced by
his 11-1 record as a starter when he throws for more than 200 yards. The
team will have a couple of running backs who form a nice duo. Arian Foster
has a big body who can pick up the tough yards, while LaMarcus Coker has blazing
speed and is able to break free on some big runs. A ton of incoming
receivers with talent will compete for the starting slots, but there is little
to no experience at this position, which could make another big season out of
Ainge difficult. The line needs to improve after struggling last year, but
Phil Fullmer thinks the group has enough talent to do so.
The defensive line is solid but nothing special. They are
going to have to improve from the team that ranked 72th in the nation last year
against the run. The linebacking position is strong with Ryan Karl, Jerod
Mayo, and Rico McCoy all being hard hitters. As long as the front four
take up blockers these guys will be free to roam the field and make plays.
The secondary is promising even though they don't have much experience outside
of free safety Jonathan Hefney. Hefney had 96 tackles and 5 picks, both of
which led the team of returning players.
Tennessee has to go to
Florida early and that is going to be a tough game to win. The key
games for this team are when they head to
California the first week, then get a home game against
Georgia and head to
Alabama in October. This team could
put together a couple of key wins and win the SEC East, but an 8-4 season is the
most likely turnout for Fullmer's squad.
