The Longhorns have one of the best quarterbacks in the nation with sophomore Colt McCoy. Last year he tied a freshman record with 29 passing touchdowns to go with 2,570 yards and only seven interceptions. Now he'll have a deep group of receivers to throw to, led by Limas Sweed who had 12 TDs and 801 yards on 46 receptions. The only real weakness on offense seems to be the line, which has to replace a couple of the best they have had. Jamaal Charles is hoping they can find some blockers because he has averaged 7.4 ypc as a freshman and 5.3 ypc as a sophomore. Look for the offense to put up a lot of points yet again. The defensive line is experienced which should help Texas maintain a staunchy run defense that ranked third in the nation a year ago, allowing just 61 ypg. Brian Orakpo takes over at end, and he showed he can be a threat to the passer with his 4.5 sacks a year ago. All three linebackers are back, but Scott Derry might be losing his spot on the outside to the talented sophomore Rod Muckelroy. Linebacker was a problem last year because the secondary had to committ more to the run, which allowed the opposition to throw for 236 ypg, which ranked 99th in the nation and was a school record for futility. Without Michael Huff and Aaron Ross, you wouldn't think those numbers would improve, but Mack Brown thinks he has answers. For us here at Locksmith Sports the season comes down to one game and one game only for the Longhorns, and that is the Red River Shootout the first weekend in October when they head to Dallas to take on the Oklahoma Sooners. Whoever wins this game should take the Big 12 South, but then again Texas lost to Kansas State and Texas A&M as a favorite last year. This is one of the teams we think will be in it at the end for the BCS title game.
