Texas Tech’s solid nucleus of veteran talent took the school to the NCAA Tourney three times in the last four seasons. Now the program will try to move on with out the school's second all-time leading scorer, Jay Jackson, among others. Knight’s chances at pulling off this season’s rebuilding project are looking dim.

Making a postseason push could depend on 7-footer Esmir Rizvic. He started 11 games last year and proved to be a solid low post defender before going down with an injury in their Big 12 opener. His offense needs improvement. Offensively, the Raiders will be counting on juco transfer Ricardo De Bem to provide a scoring spark in the frontcourt. The 6’10’’ wide-bodied banger averaged 16.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last season at Western Nebraska CC.

Rogdrick Craig, son of 49ers great Roger Craig, could be a wildcard for this team. He averaged 21.2 points and 7.4 rebounds at San Jose City College last season in the tough California juco system.

Texas Tech will have to rely on its backcourt this season. Martin Zeno can light it up. He gives Texas Tech a legit All-American candidate. He averaged 16.6 points per contest last season and added 5.3 rebounds. The senior was also his best in big games. He will do his best to carry the young Red Raiders this year. Charlie Burgess will join Zeno in the backcourt, bringing his 9.0 points per game with him, which was good for third highest on the team a season ago. With all the points coming from the backcourt, it’s clear that the frontcourt is going to have to help contribute offensively for the Red Raiders to reach their potential.

There are two many what ifs and wildcards for the Red Raiders to depend on right now. Yes, there is the possibility that Zeno will pick up where Jackson left off and a couple interior guys will step up, namely De Bem and Rizvic. But, we feel the Red Raiders will be more likely to send coach Knight to his ninth career NIT than his 29th NCAA Tournament.
