2007 US Open Predictions

Jimmy Boyd has your 2007 US Open Predictions right here at Locksmith Sports. For those of you looking for more value than Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson, I suggest you keep looking past Vijay Singh who is next on the list of who odds makers feel has the best chance of winning the 2007 Open. I couldn’t have been more unimpressed by his showing this past weekend at the Stanford St. Jude Championship and it’s obvious that he isn’t playing at the level of Tiger and Lefty thus far this season. At 16/1 odds, Vijay is being overvalued and we suggest staying away from him.

Does that mean we go with Tiger? Not necessarily. We all saw that underdogs do win at the Belmont Stakes last weekend when the filly Rags to Riches upset The Preakness winner Curlin. But I feel like if you’re going against Tiger at the Open, it has to be with Mr. Mickelson. Mickelson has not played a PGA tour event since winning The Players Championship a month ago. While some might argue that this will cause some rust, I’ll argue that he’ll be fresh, focused, and ready to go after Tiger. Psychologically, Mickelson gets to come in off a win which will do wonders for his confidence. Mickelson, unlike Woods, Furyk, and Els, has never won a U.S. Open title. With as well as he has been playing, I know he’s thinking that this could be the year.

Others will argue that Woods wants this one more. He hasn’t won the Open since 2002 and he wants his name on the top of the list of all-time champions in U.S. Open tournaments. He is tied at two with a number of golfers behind Willie Anderson, Robert Jones Jr., Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, who all won four, and Hale Irwin who won three. In fact, Wood is one of 16 other golfers who have won two U.S. Open’s and he may be ready to separate away from that group in 2007. While Woods may go down in history as the best golfer ever, he still has a ways to go to catch Nicklaus in my opinion. Not only did the Golden Bear win four U.S. Open Championships, but he finished runner-up in four more which is tied for the most all-time with Robert Jones, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, and Phil Mickelson. In other words, Lefty may be the best golfer to have never won a U.S. Open. Phil hasn’t looked better on the course that he has this season maybe ever. We’ll make Phil Mickelson our 2007 U.S. Open champ. You can get him at 8/1 odds at Bodog.
