2007 Utah Utes Football Preview & PredictionsNow view our 2008 Utah Utes Football Predictions! Get ready for the upcoming football season with Jimmy Boyd's 2007 Utah Utes football preview and predictions article. Kyle Whittingham has kept this program in the elite for mid-major football programs ever since Urban Meyer left for the Florida Gators. The team finished 8-5 a year ago, and should be ready for another similar year this year. The problem is that they have a tough early schedule when they head to Oregon State to start the year the host UCLA a couple weeks later. Road games at Louisville and then having both conference games on the road against TCU and BYU should leave this team in third place in the Mountain West Conference, but if they stay solid against their lesser foes then another bowl game will be in the works, and the Utes have won six straight post-season games.
Offensively the team has nine starters back from a year ago, and at quarterback Brian Johnson comes back from a redshirt season. He was the starter before going down to injury in 2005 then watched Brett Ratliff lead the team last year. The coaching staff thinks Johnson will be an upgrade after having a year to practice and get better. He is a very athletic quarterback who should fit into this scheme nicely. Darryl Poston returns at tailback but after running for only 3.8 yards per carry in 2006 his job is anything but safe. Matt Asiata is a junior college transfer who picked up 6.3 yards per carry for Snow College a year ago. The receivers are all back and led by Derrek Richards, who had 60 catches for 717 yards and 6 touchdowns a year ago. Brian Hernandez and Brent Casteel are both solid players who compliment Richards nicely. The line returns four big, strong starters which should help improve the ground game. The front four lost a lot at tackle, but the end spot is still manned by Martail Burnett. This guy is quick and strong, picking up 10.5 tackles for a loss last year. He is a playmaker that teams definitely have to watch out for. The linebackers should be set too with Malakai Mokofisi and Joe Jiannoni both entering their senior season with the team. Jiannoni is particularly fierce as he racked up 92 tackles and four sacks a year ago despite missing a couple of games due to injury. The secondary wasn't impressive last year, ranking 80th in the nation in passing yards against. The team is looking for some junior college transfers to step up and fill some voids, but at free safety Steve Tate is a hard hitter and the leader of the defensive backs.
