2007 Vanderbilt NCAA Basketball Picks & Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on November 25, 2007

Jimmy Boyd’s 2007 Vanderbilt season preview and NCAA basketball predictions are ready for our visitors. This team has a lot of experience, and every time that head coach Kevin Stallings gets and experienced group of guys on his roster he seems to do big things. Last year the Commodores made it to the Sweet 16 before falling to Georgetown, but Vandy is hoping this year a repeat performance is in the works. While the team has been competitive over the last few years, a second place finish behind the Vols in the SEC East would be a nice accomplishment for this team, and one that would help earn them another NCAA tournament experience.

AJ Ogilvy is supposed to come in and contribute immediately down low. He’s 6’10″, 250 pounds coming over from Australia. He starred in the FIBA Under 19 World Championships and should be more ready than any other freshman for the intense competition seen in the SEC. Alan Metcalfe is another big foreign import who will see time at center. This senior has had problems staying healthy, but gets high praises in practice. Ross Neltner should put up better numbers as he slides back to the power forward spot. He was a little over-matched at times when trying to play the 5-spot a year ago. JeJuan Brown is a great rebounder who will see quite a bit of time, but he needs to develop a better outside shot to see the starting lineup.

Shan Foster should be ready for a breakout season in his last year at Vandy. He didn’t shoot as well as he has in the past, but still averaged nearly 16 ppg last season. He’ll be relied on pretty heavily to score from outside without Derrick Byars and Dan Cage, who were lost to graduation. Alex Gordon was a big-time scorer in his high school days, but he finally expanded his role to the more traditional point guard duties last season. He didn’t turn the ball over hardly at all, and with his ability to hit the outside shot forces the opposition to expand their defense. Jermaine Beal will be counted on in his sophomore season to put in some quality minutes, but there are a few other players who can also provide the team with depth.
