Chris Nickson did a better job than most expected filling in for
Jay Cutler in 2006 as he picked up 2,085 yards through the air and added 694
yards on the ground. The amount of time that the backs split last year meant
that Nickson was the leading rusher, but the ground game still picked up nearly
150 yards a game. The problem was they either blew up or were shut down, so more
consistency is needed this year. Receiver is a position Vandy doesn't have to
worry about with Earl Bennett and George Smith. Bennett will most likely smash
the SEC's career record mark for both receptions and yards this year, which is
his junior campaign. With five seniors starting on the line, this should not be
an area of too much concern.
Curtis Gatewood heads a line that showed progress last year in racking up 25
sacks. This unit will have to keep improving as their rush defense was pourous.
The linebacking corps will be solid this year with one of the best in the nation
in the middle with Jonathan Goff. He also has the hard hitting Marcus Buggs and
playmaker Brandon Bryant to help him on the outside. The secondary gave up big
plays a year ago but should be improved if Myron Lewis plays as well as he did
in the spring.
Vanderbilt isn't going to be in the top half of the SEC East, but they have a
chance to win 5 or 6 games and improve on their 4-8 record from a year ago.
Getting Alabama,
Kentucky, and
Ole Miss will be the best chance
for SEC wins with possible blowout losses coming at
Florida and
Tennessee. As long as Vandy is in
the SEC they are going to have a tough time competing. Simply put this is
an academic institution and football is not the sport for brainiacs.
