Jimmy Boyd’s 2007 Villanova Wildcats predictions and season preview highlight this young team’s chances at making its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. It’s not going to be easy for the Cats who must replace three multi-year starters. Still, offense is not going to be a problem for this team as the Wildcats figure to be one of the highest scoring teams in the Big East, but how the newcomers do defensively will ultimately measure this squad.

Sophomore guard Scottie Reynolds will be Villanova backers’ best friend. He was last season’s Big East Rookie of the Year averaging just under 15 points per game on the season, but over 18 points per game in Big East play. Juniors Dante Cunningham and Shane Clark will likely start at forward. Both are solid 6’8’’ athletes will comparable ability. They can both score and rebound. If freshmen Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes are ready to go, we could see head coach Jay Wright going with a three-guard look. You’re not going to find many teams across the country with a more athletic starting five.

We can expect even more scoring from Reynolds, who exploded for 40 against UConn last season and scored 20 or better 10 times, as Wright moves him off the ball. Fisher, the New Jersey Prep Player of the Year, looks to be the best ball-handler the ‘cats have maybe ever had. Stokes is a McDonald’s All-American with range to 30-feet on the perimeter. Expect the Cats to find this kid often in transition. His defense is the downside of his game right now and will be the thing that keeps him from significant minutes if he can't figure it out.

Not even the talented Randy Foye and Allan Ray were stars over night. It’s going to take a season or two for these young guns to jell. The losses of Curtis Sumpter, Will Sheridan, and Mike Nardi will prove to be too much for the Wildcats to overcome in terms of making a deep postseason run, but we still fill this youthful group will make the Big Dance.

Because of Villanova’s explosive offense, you’re going to want to take a close look at this team in the underdog role. We don’t expect them to get blown out by anybody. These guys are great at dictating tempo and should play a lot of high scoring games as well. Early season Overs plays before the linesmakers adjust could be the ticket.
