2007 Virginia NCAA Basketball Picks & Predictions

Jimmy Boyd’s 2007 Virginia season preview and college basketball predictions show a Cavaliers team that will most likely end up in the NCAA tournament again come March, but will find themselves leaving the dance early. Last year’s team went 21-11 and 11-5 in ACC play, beating Albany in the first round of the tournament before losing a close game to Tennessee in the second round. The good news is that the star of last year’s squad, Sean Singletary, decided to bypass the NBA and come back for his senior season. He’ll play a big role in this team’s success for the upcoming year and if they can break out of the middle of the pack in the tough ACC.

Virginia is going to have a tall lineup this year with seven players coming in at 6′8″ or over. Senior Tunji Soroye will start at center, and while he’s almost non-existent on offense, he provides a shot blocking threat and solid rebounder with his 6′11″ frame. The other big guys are Laurynas Mikalauskas, who was high energy and passionate last year when healthy, and Ryan Pettinella, who is a big banger but needs to be able to knock down a few shots. Jamil Tucker can shoot the three at nearly 50%, which is nice for a guy who stands 6′8″, but he doesn’t play any defense. At small forward you’ll see Adrian Joseph, Will Harris, and Solomon Tat. Joseph is the only real threat to score as the other two struggled in limited playing time a year ago.

Singletary has been All-ACC the last two years and is widely regarded as one of the best guards in the entire country. He’s a real scoring threat who is one of the fastest guys in college basketball. He isn’t a true point guard, but plays hard and can get hot from outside. The other guard spot is kind of up in the air with Mamadi Diane the top choise. He isn’t a great ball-handler and gets lost at times on defense, but nearly averaged double digits a year ago playing solid minutes. Calvin Baker and Sam Zeglinski provide depth and if either of these two can rise to play point, Singletary will get to move off the ball and concentrate more on putting points on the board.
