Virginia has eight starters returning on offense, but that doesn't mean a lot to the fans after watching their school rank 110th in points scored and 113th in yards gained last year.  Jameel Sewell looked lost half the time as a freshman and had six picks to go with only five touchdowns.  He also had off-season wrist surgery that limited his practice, so his improvement will be stymied slightly.  Cedric Peerman doesn't have a lot of experience at running back, but the coaches think he's got some ability.  There isn't a proven wide receiver on the team, which should also hamper Sewell's progress.  The offensive line wasn't good a year ago, but with all five guys coming back the protection should improve.

On defense there are ten guys back from a unit that ranked 17th in the nation last year, giving up only 170 passing yards per game.  The front three on this 3-4 is tough with Chris Long, son of Howie Long, and Jeffrey Fitzgerald, one of the best freshman ends in the nation last year, on the outside.  The middle is manned by bulky Allen Billyk.  All four linebackers are back as well and this unit will have depth with young, fast, athletic players rotating in.  The secondary is going to be faster than ever this year and will complete a defense that will be tough to score against.

Virginia needs it's offense to produce in order to win some low scoring games that the defense will keep them in.  This team could get off to a great start with only a home game against Georgia Tech that they should be an underdog in their first seven games.  Then they go to Maryland and NC State before getting Wake Forest, Miami, and Virginia Tech.  A .500 season is expected, but with a few breaks this team could go bowling.
