2007 Virginia Tech Basketball Predictions & Season
Preview
Last year's
Virginia Tech basketball team
did some damage in the ACC, but our
picks and predictions for the
2007 version of the squad
doesn't see them ending up anywhere
near 22-12 nor 10-6 in the
conference. The team lost two
doesn't have any experience in the
backcourt, and has a whole bunch of
freshman coming in who will be
fighting for playoff time. The
team won't have Zabian Dowdell and
Jamon Gordon, who combined for 29.1
ppg, 8.6 assists per game, and 4.9
steals per game a year ago, and if
you are inexperienced at guard in
the ACC, you can expect to have
problems.

In the front court the team will have to deal with the graduation of Coleman
Collins, who departed after scoring nearly eight points per game, five rebounds
per game, and over a block per contest a year ago, plus freshman Augustus
Gilchrist and Robert Krabbendam. Gilchrist was an incoming freshman who
was uncomfortable with attending Tech after the April 16th shootings and
Krabbendam was a 7-foot center who felt like he wasn't getting enough playing
time. The team will still be alright though if Deron Washington can
improve his shooting ability, he's already show his athleticism with his
awe-inspiring dunks a year ago.
Two point guards will vie for the starting role and it's bad enough that both
are freshman, but Hank Thorns wasn't recruited until late in the off-season and
Malcolm Delaney is only 5'9". AD Vasello will be counted on for outside
scoring as he shot 42% from the 3-point line while putting up over 11 ppg a year
ago. There isn't much here for depth if you are looking for experience,
but coach Seth Greenberg thinks his freshman class is a talented one.
Expectations are not going to be very high for the team in Blacksberg this year,
so that means the college basketball
odds will reflect this. You can expect to see a lot of
college basketball picks from
Jimmy Boyd, especially in the early going, trying to capitalize on the low
expectations for teams like the Hokies. Don't take this team to win the
ACC title, but you might want to give them some looks throughout the year as you
try to win more of your bets in NCAA basketball action.
