2007 Washington Redskins Predictions & Season Preview

Now read what we think in our 2008 Washington Redskins NFL Predictions & Season Preview!

The Washington Redskins were back on track it seemed in 2005, but last year the team completely fell apart to finish 5-11.  The team didn't do a whole lot this year in the free-agent market, but they did add London Fletcher and Fred Smoot to shore up one of the worst defenses in the league last year.  Their big name assistant coaches are being paid a lot of money, and both were disappointing last season.  Both Gregg Williams and Al Saunders are on the hot seat.

Jason Campbell is supposed to be the answer for the future at quarterback.  He has had plenty of time to learn under Mark Brunell as he sat out the entire first season and nine games of his second before getting his first start.  After getting in the game he showed that he was capable enough to lead the team, but just how good he can be will be up in the air until the season is underway.  Ladell Betts and Clinton Portis are both capable of carrying the load, but Portis will be the featured back if he's healthy.  Betts most likely will spell Portis a little more than the seven times per game he carried the ball when Portis was around.  Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle El were two pretty big disappointments a year ago, and someone is going to have to step up this year to take the pressure off of Santana Moss.  Moss was also bothered by hamstring injuries that cut his production from career-numbers in 2005.

The defense's problems last season started with their line.  Washington had only 19 sacks, which was worst in the league, and the lack of pressure led to only 6 interceptions, which was also worst in the league.  However, the team didn't get a pass rusher in free agency, nor the draft.  Andre Carter was brought in from the 49ers a year ago to be a threat, but he didn't start coming on until the end of the season.  At linebacker London Fletcher was brought in both because he is an upgrade and because he knows Gregg Williams's system from his days as a Bill.  The rest of this group of linebackers leave something to be desired.  The secondary is going to be young and talented with Sean Taylor entering his fourth year as one of the best in the game and LaRon Landry out of LSU being touted as the best defensive player in the draft.  The corner position is deep with mediocrity and will have to improve on the 30 TDs they allowed through the air.

One of the best bets of the season is taking the UNDER 7.5 wins this year for the Redskins.  We see 7 being the most likely number, but 6 or less is also a real possibility.  Stay away from Washington when it comes to winning the division or any other props too as they don't have the talent to compete.
