2007 Arizona Wildcats Basketball Preview & Predictions
The Washington State Cougars came out of
nowhere last season to win 26 games, advancing to the
second round of the NCAA Tournament. Jimmy Boyd’s
2007 Washington State Cougars predictions and season
preview will let you know if last season’s success
was a fluke or for real.

Many predicted the Cougars to finish dead last in the
Pac-10 last season. Boy did those analysts have to eat their words. The
Huskies went 13-5 in the Pac-10 and were 26-8 on the season. A double OT
loss to Vanderbilt kept this team from an unthinkable Sweet 16
appearance. We like the Cougars to make the Sweet 16 this season and
here’s why:
Last season’s run boosted the confidence of head coach Tony Bennett’s
recruits ten fold. The Cougars only lose one guy out of last season's
rotation and his 8ppg and 5rpg will be easily replaced by the returners.
Unlike many college basketball teams, Washington State was able to win
by playing extraordinary defense and that’s why a Pac-10 title is not
out of the question.
6’2’’ guard Derrick Low is Washington State’s top returning scorer at
13.7ppg. Low has a mountain of experiencing entering his fourth season
as a starter. Some see a little Steve Nash in Low’s game. He’s a
juggernaut on the court, but better at hunting his own shot than
creating in my opinion and his numbers support that notion as well.
Senior Kyle Weaver was the team’s second leading scorer last season at
11.2ppg. He, like Low, is entering his fourth season as a starter. At
6’6’’, Weaver is a very versatile wing player who is a great defender.
He reminds me of Shane Battier. Both of these guys represented the
U.S.A. in the Pan-Am games last summer. Weaver looks to be the better
NBA prospect.
Junior Daven Harmeling can flat out fill it up. He shot 43% from
three-point range last season and is a threat to score 20 on any given
night.
Not a lot of scoring will come from the frontcourt outside of 6’10’’
forward Robbie Cowgill and even he is more of a do-it-all guy than a
scorer.
Perhaps, more so than any other squad in the Pac-10, the Cougars best
define what it means to play as a team and that will lead to another
successful year.
Get ready totals lovers to pick your spots with the Cougars this season
as their exceptional play on defense will provide us with some clear
Unders opportunities. Make sure you check out all of Jimmy’s 2007 Pac 10
predictions to see how the rest of the school stack up.
