2007 Washington State Cougars Football Preview & PredictionsStay up to date with our 2008 Washington State Football Predictions! Jimmy Boyd presents his 2007 Washington State Cougars football preview & predictions, but if you are a fan looking for some positive news then this might not be the best place to turn. This team hasn't made a bowl in three years and it's going to be tough seeing them doing so this season. This doesn't mean that you can't make money by beating on the Cougars though as they will be heavy underdogs in several games this year. If you need help picking out winners against the college football odds then you should take a look at our college football picks package.
The on position that seems solid is at quarterback where Alex Brink enters his season campaign. Last year Brink had 19 TDs and 2,899 yards passing which moved him up to No. 3 on the school's career passing list. If he stays healthy he should be the all-time leader by the end of the season. He'll have a talented cast to throw to as well, with Michael Bumpus being a stellar split back and Brandon Gibson, who averaged nearly 15 yards per catch as a sophomore. The line returns three starters which should give Brink plenty of time to find his targets. The problem will be the ground game which was sub-par a season ago, and now has a serious lack of depth due to academic problems. Dwight Tardy is only a sophomore and he gained 667 yards a year ago, but time will tell if he can be a primary back. Defensively the front four should be the strength of the team, and they have a pair of great run-stopping tackles in Ropati Pitoitua and Aaron Johnson. The team thinks they'll be able to get to the passer, and with Lance Broadus and his 7.5 sacks from a year ago returning that seems likely. Both outside linebackers are gone from 2006, which could hurt the run defense. The secondary is weak. They allowed 243 yards per game last year, which was 108th nationally and now are replacing three of the four starters. Washington State should be able to put points up with their potent aerial attack, but stopping someone will be a challenge. The tough schedule leads us to believe they will only find 3 or 4 wins and miss out on the post-season yet again. The big game comes at the end against their in-state rivals at Washington. The home stand against Arizona State might also give them a chance at a victory, and they should win against Stanford, but the rest of the Pac-10 schedule is going to be rough.
