2007 West Virginia Mountaineers Football Preview & Predictions

Jimmy Boyd's 2007 West Virginia Mountaineers football preview and predictions are now posted and we see a team that will contend for a national title.  There are some holes on the defense, especially against the pass since the Mountaineers ranked 109th nationally in that category a year ago.  Opposing teams are forced to pass though with this high potent, time-eating, rush attack that is Steve Slaton and Pat White.  The end of October starts the real test with a trip to Rutgers and a home game against Louisville.  This is the year for West Virginia.

Pat White's stats got slightly overlooked since Steve Slaton was such a beast last season, but this guy was one pass attempt away from being in the top 10 in passing efficiency, and he was the 16th best rusher in the nation with more than 100 ypg.  He is the fastest quarterback in the nation, but with his passing skills keeps the opposition honest.  Slaton is recovering from off-season wrist surgery, but last year he racked up 1,744 yards and 16 touchdowns on 248 carries.  He was the Big East Offensive Player of the Year and will be an early front runner for this year's Heisman.  Darius Reynard is the only proven pass catcher, and receiver is kind of a weak spot on the team, but this team focuses on the rush anyway so don't expect points to be hard to come by.

Four lettermen return to the defensive front three, with a beast in Johnny Dingle at end and a monster in Keilen Dykes at tackle.  All three linebackers need to be replaced from a fast group a year ago, but there are three rugged, intelligent, and younger guys to take their place.  Don't expect a major dropoff at this position.  Four defensive backs who started a year ago return to the five-man secondary, but that might not be a good thing.  The cornerbacks need to step up their game, and hope the line can get enough pressure on the quarterback to make up for some mistakes.
