I’ll get right to it. There’s no way this year’s Badgers can accomplish what last year’s team did. The Badgers were ranked number one in the polls for the first time in school history. They locked up a number two seed in the NCAA Tourney. They strung together 17 straight wins and totaled 30 on the season. The 2007 Badgers have a lot to live up to, and although they will ultimately fall short, you can guarantee that Bo Ryan’s team won’t go down without a fight.

Wisconsin’s goal last year was to make the Final Four, but they suffered a tough loss to UNLV in round two. This year’s goal will be to finish in the top four teams in the Big Ten and to reach the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight season. The Buckeyes will have to do it without Big Ten Player of the Year Alando Tucker, who was a first round draft choice of the Phoenix Suns, and offensive sparkplug Kammron Taylor, who averaged 13.3 points per game.

The Badgers still have some experience and depth in the frontcourt. Seniors Brian Butch and Greg Stiemsma and juniors Marcus Landry and Joe Krabbenhoft all have over 50 career games played and all played key roles a year ago. All of these guys will be asked to do more offensively. Butch is the top returning scorer at 8.8 points per game. He averaged just 19.5 minutes per game last season and will be called on to log more minutes as well.

The ball will be given to senior Michael Flowers in the backcourt. Flowers takes great care of the ball and is a pesky defender. You shouldn’t see his same hesitation to shoot this season as he’ll be one of the main attractions. Trevon Hughes and Jason Bohannon will likely play alongside Flowers when Ryan goes to his three-guard looks. Both players are talented and just need more experience.

Bo Ryan just doesn’t lose, that’s why it’s hard to doubt UW. Since he took over the Badgers in 2001-02, he has compiled the second best record in the Big Ten and has never finished lower than fourth in the final Big Ten standings. UW often wins with defense and not making mistakes and that will have to be its mentality more than ever as two top-notch scorers have moved on. Expect this team to still be a factor in the race for a Big Ten title, but we have them chalked up as a one and done NCAA Tournament team and a third place Big Ten squad.
