The Hawks hope that talented first round draft picks Al Horford from Florida and Acie Law from Texas A&M will be able to step in right away and help this team improve. With the wealth of young talent the Hawks have picked up the last few years, a turnaround is not too far in the distance as long as Atlanta can hold on to these youngsters. No such turnaround will happen this season. But Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Josh Childress, and Zaza Pachulia all averaged in double digits last season and represent the future of this team. Horford, Shelden Williams, Law, and Salim Stoudemire also have the potential to help this team become a powerhouse several years down the road. Just how young are the Hawks? The average age on the roster is 25. The biggest thing for the young Hawks players to do right now is to work hard and realize that they have a nice young nucleus in place.

If Atlanta can beat out Charlotte for the next-to-last spot this season and improve on last season’s win total, we can assume that they are moving in the right direction.

Because of Atlanta’s youth, we can figure that they’ll try to get out and run a little more to gain an advantage on some of the more veteran teams. The Hawks are going to have to average more than the 93.7 points per game they scored last year to win many games and that might be a way to do so.

The Hawks desperately needed a point guard and they were delighted when Acie Law was still around. Joe Johnson was the team leader in assists at 4.4 assists per game last year. If Law can come in and perform it will take some heat off of Johnson to be a playmaker, which should keep him fresher.

The Hawks have a rare amount of young talent and all they need now is to mature it and keep it together. The fact that the players on this team organized their own offseason workouts to get a head start on camp sends me a positive vibe about this team. I think the Hawks can improve by 5-8 games this season.
