The Orlando Magic made the playoffs last season, but they quickly exited as the Detroit Pistons sent them packing in just four games. Orlando was one of three Southeast Division teams to make the playoffs last season, but all three of those teams were swept in the first round. The Magic are hoping to use youth to their advantage to overtake the Heat and size to get past the Wizards this season.

Dwight Howard truly is one of the brightest young stars in the game. The 15 rebounds he averaged in the playoffs were outstanding, but his 15 points per game were lackluster at best. Howard only averaged 17.6 points per game during the regular season. He is going to need to score in the mid to upper 20s every night for the Magic to become an elite team in the East. He is already a valuable defensive presence and can rebound with the best in the league. It’s going to take more points to take his game and the Magic to the next level.

Rashard Lewis could be the missing piece that this team needs. He can fill the shoes of Grant Hill. This guy is long, quick, can score inside and out, and poses matchup problems. His ability should take some heat off of Howard. I think he is a very good pick up for the Magic.

Jameer Nelson is a solid point guard who can score the basketball. He needs to become a better playmaker, though, to move into the same category with the elite guards in the league. His 3.3 assists per game just aren’t good enough.

I feel like this team is still too young to be thinking NBA championship and even too young to capture a Southeast Division title, but the right pieces appear to be in place. Give Lewis a season to mesh with the young talent in Orlando and this team may turn some heads in 2008-09.
