2008 ACC Football Odds

Favorite – Clemson Tigers: +190 to win ACC at BetUS
The Tigers appear poised to breakthrough with a conference title as they boast some of the best offensive weapons in the league. QB Cullen Harper and wide receiver Aaron Kelly will be duking it out for Offensive Player of the Year honors much the same way that Tom Brady and Randy Moss were competing against one another for NFL MVP honors. The offense gets a lot of air time, but the defense actually ranked 9th in the nation last season and should be rock solid again. Clemson boasts one of the best passing defenses in the nation thanks to a deep and athletic secondary. The only way to beat Clemson is to try grinding it out to eat up the clock, but these guys are solid up front too. This could be the year Tommy Bowden gets the monkey off his back.
Sleeper – North Carolina Tar Heels: +800 to win ACC at BetUS.com
Don’t even think about counting out the Heels this season. North Carolina will put its best defense on the field in nearly a decade and that could be good enough to win in a weak ACC Coastal. The VA Tech Hokies are as bare as they’ve been in quite some time and that really opens the door for the Heels here, who have speed and talented playmakers at every level of the defense. The offense will be much improved as well with Greg Little in the backfield for all of 2008. This big wideout (6’3”, 210 pounds) was moved from receiver to running back for the final two games of last season and looked to be something special. He rushed for 247 yards and two scores in those contests. T.J. Yates to Hakeem Nicks is something you’ll be hearing plenty of this season as well. Nicks set a school record with 74 catches for 958 yards last season. The Heels just might steel the ACC if Clemson’s history of ill-time stumbles continues.
The betting line on Virginia Tech is +250 to win the ACC and it is +400 for Miami and +450 for Florida State. While VA Tech is undoubtedly down, losing seven defensive starters, this team has proven that is can reload with the best programs in the country. Miami and FSU, on the other hand, have been down for a few years now and are being overvalued because of their strong traditions. You won’t want to fall into the trap of taking either of those schools.
