2008 BCS Championship Game Odds & Predictions

It's the time you have all been waiting for as the 2008 BCS Championship Game between Ohio State and LSU will decide college football's national champion.  The game will take place in New Orleans, Louisiana at the SuperDome on January 8th at 8 PM EST and will be televised by FOX.  Even though there was quite a bit of debate about which two teams should be playing for the BCS Championship, you can't really say that these two teams deserve it any less than the rest.  Maybe with this year's controversy and the fact that there were so many other teams worth looking at will finally give rise to a playoff system.  Who knows, but what we do know is that the winner of this game will lay claim to being a national champion.

Ohio State is making their second straight trip to the BCS Championship game and the Buckeyes are hoping for a better result than the 41-14 beating the Florida Gators gave them a year ago.  We have no doubts that head coach Jim Tressel will make some changes and improve his team's efforts.  Look at the job he has done at Ohio State with another 11-1 season bringing him to 73-15 in Big Ten play, 208-72-2 overall in 22 years as a head coach, which includes a 2003 BCS National title.  This year the team took some time off of football activities to work on conditioning, lift weights, and get back to full strength.  Ohio State's last game was a long time ago, a November 17th win over Michigan, which will give them a 50-day layoff.  This year the team is going to stay and work in Ohio instead of traveling to the bowl site like last year.  Of course, this year's team probably won't be as bombarded by offers like last year's high profile names were, including the Heisman winner Troy Smith.  This year's quarterback is Todd Boeckman, and while he didn't have Smith-like numbers, he was pretty impressive in putting up more than 2,000 yards and 23 touchdowns to only 12 interceptions.  He has the help of tailback Chris Wells who had more than 1500 rushing yards and 14 scores and is explosive as they come in NCAA football.

LSU is no slouch either as the no. 2 ranked team in the land.  The Tigers are 11-2 with a 6-2 SEC mark, giving them their second straight appearance in New Orleans for a BCS Bowl game and they'll have another shot at the national title they won four years ago when they upset the Oklahoma Sooners.  There was some controversy in allowing the Tigers into this game after losing two during the season, but an SEC championship is pretty impressive due to the strength of the conference so LSU edged out West Virginia and Oklahoma.  Matt Flynn should be healed in time for this game and even though LSU won against Tennessee without him, he would be a big help if he can return.  He threw for 2,233 yards, 17 touchdowns, and had only 10 interceptions as his first season as the starter, but he is also a threat to run the ball as well.  The Tigers have other offensive weapons in running back Jacob Hester and the talented Early Doucet at receiver.  The offense ranked in the top 25 in both scoring and yardage, so even with the tough Buckeye defense LSU should be able to move the ball.

This game should be all about defense as the Buckeyes are the top-rated team on that side of the ball while LSU ranks no. 3.  Ohio State allows opponents to gain only 148.2 ypg via the air and 80.5 ppg on the ground for an average of 10.7 ppg against.  Those are pretty impressive numbers while LSU has given up 20.1 ppg but only on 175.1 ypg passing and 106.1 ypg rushing.  This game could be a defensive gridlock if the offenses come out the least bit off rhythm.
