2008 Big 12 Conference Basketball Tournament

Written by Jimmy Boyd on March 2, 2008

Jimmy Boyd’s 2008 Big 12 Conference tournament predictions weigh the field in one of the nation’s strongest basketball conferences. Find out who Jimmy is putting his money with his NCAA basketball picks on to cut down the nets at the Sprint Center.

Big 12 Conference tournament action begins Thursday March 16th in Kansas City’s Sprint Center and continues through Sunday March 16th. Following the same television proceedings as usual, ESPN will broadcast the entire Big 12 tournament on its family of networks (ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN U, and ESPN PLUS). You’ll definitely be able to see the Semifinals Saturday afternoon on ESPN 2 and the championship game Sunday afternoon on ESPN.

All 12 Big 12 schools will get a crack at winning the conference tournament, which keeps hope alive for the teams on the bubble and those with otherwise no hopes of playing postseason hoops.

We know that Texas and Kansas are going to get automatic bids to the Big Dance, but if either team is able to win the Big 12 Conference tourney, they just might play themselves in to a number one seed. Right now it looks like Kansas State is in the driver’s seat to take the number three seed, which would give them a first round bye. Kansas State boasts two of the most talented players in the country in Michael Beaseley and Bill Walker. The Wildcats beat Kansas once this season and played Texas tough, but I ultimately feel the Cats are too inexperienced to win the Big 12 tournament. Baylor and Texas A&M are the other two schools that need to play well in the conference tournament to improve their Big Dance seeds. I don’t think Baylor has a serious shot at winning the conference tourney because it does not play good enough defense. Texas A&M is a team I look to that could be this year’s sleeper. The Aggies have beaten the Longhorns once this season and we will see how they compete with Kansas in the last game of the Big 12 regular season.

When the smoke clears, I like the Jayhawks to win the Big 12 tourney. They lost to Texas in the regular season, but this is a very experienced, deep team which will win when it counts.

2007 Recap:

Kansas and Texas faced off in last season’s Big 12 Conference title game. Texas jumped out to a big lead behind an amazing shooting display by Kevin Durant. Kansas fought back and eventually won the game in OT. The Jayhawks, then, entered the Big Dance on an 11-game winning streak and went on to advance to the Elite Eight before losing to the UCLA Bruins. Texas would end its season in round two of the NCAA tournament against a USC Trojans team which played very good defensively – as Tim Floyd’s squads tend to do.

Previous winner:
2007 – Kansas
2006 – Kansas
2005 – Oklahoma State
2004 – Oklahoma State
