2008 Brett Favre Odds & Predictions
The Brett Favre circus has inspired NFL odds makers to come up with a series of props for the future Hall of Famer as he squats under center for the New York Jets in the 2008-09 season. Jimmy lists the Brett Favre Odds below as seen at BodogLife Sportsbook and gives you a little insight into Favre’s career to aid you in making your NFL betting wagers.
I already knew the headlines would read “Broadway Brett” before they even came out as Brett Favre instantly becomes the most famous New York Jet since Broadway Joe Namath. He will have his work cut out for himself though as he joins a team that is coming off a dismal 4-12 season and will try to revamp an offense which averaged just 17 points per game. Besides solving their QB deficiencies, which now they feel they have done, the Jets brought in Pro Bowl offensive lineman Alan Faneca and fellow lineman Damien Woody to bolster the line.
Favre may be 38 years old, but he is coming off one of the best seasons of his career statistically and took the Packers to the NFC title game before losing in overtime to the eventual Super Bowl champion Giants. In 2007-08, Favre posted the best completion percentage of his career (66.5%), which was the fourth-best in the league. Favre also recorded the sixth-best passer rating in the league (95.7) which was his best in 12 seasons. His 4,155 passing yards was also good for fourth-best in the league.
With Favre not hanging up his cleats just yet, football’s all-time iron man will be making his 254th consecutive start when the Jets take on the Dolphins in week 1. To put things in perspective, the Jets have had 15 different QB’s start during that stretch. Fans and coaches agree that finding some consistency at the QB spot has been a long time coming for this franchise. The Bills and the Dolphins will both be beatable for the Jets, but it is going to be hard for New York to get past the Pack in Favre’s first season.
In looking at the schedules of the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets, we see that the Packers will actually face a slightly tougher schedule than the Jets. The Packers’ opponents had a combined winning percentage of .531 in 2007 while the Jets’ opponents had a winning percentage of .457. New York also just plays five games against teams who advance to the playoffs last season and two of those games are against the Patriots. While the Packers still arguably have the more talented team, it appears that Aaron Rodgers will have no cake-walk in his first season as Green Bay starter.
For Green Bay, it works out perfectly that the Jets are not scheduled to play at Lambeau Field until 2014. Favre will almost certainly be retired by then.
