2008 British Open Predictions

Written by Jimmy Boyd on July 20, 2008

In the last major, Jimmy Boyd accurately advised his clients to take Tigers Woods, who beat Rocco Mediate in one of the most thrilling majors golf has ever seen. Jimmy is back for more domination in the major tournaments with his 2008 British Open predictions. This 137th Open Championship isn’t set to tee off until July 17th, but Jimmy is all ready to go with his top contenders so you can get your bets in early. This major will have a much different feel as it will be the first time that Tiger Woods won’t be in a major field since 1996. While Tiger’s absence is bad for golf, it’s good for the rest of the field because they won’t have Tiger and his three British Open wins in the back of their minds when he makes his traditional Saturday move. Jimmy Boyd is ready to roll with the three golfers that he’s wagering on to win the British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club.

Sergio Garcia: Bet the Favorite Sergio Garcia at 8-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

It’s been a big year for the country of Spain with Garcia’s win at The Players Championship, Spain’s title in the European Soccer Championships, and Rafael Nadal’s wins in the French Open and Wimbledon. I think Spain continue it’s domination of sport with a win by El Nino here. Garcia holds an edge over many of the other top golfer’s because he is used to playing European style golf courses and in European weather conditions. He had this tournament all but won last year at Carnoustie, but a Sunday collapse kept him from winning that elusive first major of his career. It took Phil Mickelson a while to get that first one and now I think Garcia is primed and ready.

Adam Scott: Bet the Sleeper at 25-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

I love when oddsmakers give sleeper odds to world class golfers like Scott. Like Garcia, he has also spent a great deal of time playing the European Tour and that has been a strong determinant for success at past British Opens. Scott’s eighth place finish at the British Open in 2006 is the best of his career in the tournament, but his game has come a long way since then. Scott won the EDS Byron Nelson Championship this season and has to be one of the favorites for Sunday contention.

Hunter Mahan: Make a Great Value Wager at 45-1 odds at Sportsbook.com

Mahan should get the attention of long shot lovers and value hunters alike at the British. He has had a solid season and is playing strong golf here of late with an eighteenth place tie at the US Open and a second place tie at the Travelers Championship. Last season, Mahan tied for sixth place in this event and I fully expect him to finish strong again as his game suits this course well. Driving accuracy is important as it makes greens easier to hit in regulation. Drives out of the fairway are much tougher to save in the nasty rough of Royal Birkdale. Mahan ranks fifteenth in total driving and second on the tour in greens hit in regulation. His accurate game makes him a strong contender at a nice price.
