It's been a big year for the country of Spain with Garcia's win at The Players Championship, Spain's title in the European Soccer Championships, and Rafael Nadal's wins in the French Open and Wimbledon. I think Spain continue it's domination of sport with a win by El Nino here. I love when oddsmakers give sleeper odds to world class golfers like Scott. Like Garcia, he has also spent a great deal of time playing the European Tour and that has been a strong determinant for success at past British Opens. Scott's eighth place finish at the British Open in 2006 is the best of his career in the tournament, but his game has come a long way since then. Scott won the EDS Byron Nelson Championship this season and has to be one of the favorites for Sunday contention.

Mahan should get the attention of long shot lovers and value hunters alike at the British. He has had a solid season and is playing strong golf here of late with an eighteenth place tie at the US Open and a second place tie at the Travelers Championship. Last season, Mahan tied for sixth place in this event and I fully expect him to finish strong again as his game suits this course well. Driving accuracy is important as it makes greens easier to hit in regulation. Drives out of the fairway are much tougher to save in the nasty rough of Royal Birkdale. Mahan ranks fifteenth in total driving and second on the tour in greens hit in regulation. His accurate game makes him a strong contender at a nice price.
