2008 Byron Nelson Predictions &
Odds
The PGA Tour heads to Irving, Texas for the 2008 Byron Nelson
Championship at TPC Four Seasons Resort from April 24th-27th and Jimmy
Boyd has you covered. Boo Weekely won last week in the
Verizon Heritage, capturing his
second straight tournament win in that event. Can Scott Verplank defend his
title at the Byron Nelson this week? Trevor Immelman returns to action after
taking last week's tournament off following a win at the Masters. Perhaps,
he can stay hot at TPC Four Seasons Resort. Without further ado, Jimmy Boyd
weighs the 2008 Byron Nelson Championship odds and offers up his favorites
to win in this golf betting preview.
The big news this week is the renovations that have been made to the course
and how that will affect the players. While the changes are sure to make the
course look better and play much more consistently, reigning champ Scott
Verplank isn't exactly keen on the changes. Verplank said, "I know the
greens needed to be fixed, but I putted on them OK." You never want to see a
course changed after you win on it, even if you know the changes are going
to be good." Despite his subtle trepidation, I still consider VerPlank as
one of the favorites to win this tournament.
Bet Scott VerPlank showing
great value at 28-1 odds at BodogLife.com
Of the field, VerPlank has the most top ten finishes in the Byron Nelson
Championship with five, which is one more than Mark Calcavecchia and Shigeki
Maruyama. It's only fitting that Verplank has enjoyed so much success in the
tournament that honors the great Byron Nelson, whom he knew personally. This
could be golf's version of home court advantage with Verplank being a Texas
native. Verplank has not had a great 2008 by the standards of golf's elite
with just one top ten finish coming in the Northern Trust Open back in
February when he tied for fifth, but he has a lot of confidence in this
event and would be well worth the risk for the return his odds will get you.
Bet long shot Shigeki
Maruyama at 66-1 odds at BodogLife.com
Maruyama could be a long shot lover's dream this week. Maruyama won the
event in 2002 and has four top ten finishes in just eight career starts.
That's only one less than Verplank. Maruyama has not had one top ten finish
in 2008 so you can bet that he'll be looking to really compete here in a
tournament where he has had so much success.
Bet Luke Donald at 18-1
odds at BodogLife.com
Trevor Immelman is being a little overhyped with the odds he is facing
following the Masters win, but last year's Byron Nelson runner up, Luke
Donald, is worth betting on at 18/1 odds. Donald is off to a nice start in
2008 with two top three finishes in just five tournaments played. After a
rough Masters, in which he missed the cut, expect Donald to regroup and play
very well this week. He really felt like he let last year's Byron Nelson
slip away and he'll be ready to challenge here after sitting out last week's
event.
