2008 College Football Picks & Predictions
Jimmy Boyd has broken down all the teams and the conferences for the upcoming season so now it’s time to unveil who he likes to contend for the national title in his 2008 college football predictions.
The way I see it, there are six teams capable of winning the BCS Championship: Georgia and Florida from the SEC, Oklahoma and Missouri from the Big 12, Ohio State from the Big Ten, and USC from the Pac-10. We’ll take a closer look at the chances of each team below.
Georgia Bulldogs – Georgia is the best team in the country the way I see it. No team is as solid on both sides of the football. Running back Knowshon Moreno has the stuff to be the second straight sophomore to win the Heisman and QB Matthew Stafford continues to make good decisions under center. There, perhaps, is not a better defensive front seven in the country. It’s not going to be a cake walk for the Dawgs if they hope to hoist that championship trophy as their schedule is tough. The Dawgs must go to South Carolina, Arizona State, LSU, and Auburn. They’ll face Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia Tech at home. And then there’s the neutral-site death match with Florida. The Dawgs are the best team this decade not to win a national title and it looks like it could finally be their time. Bet Georgia at 7-1 odds to win the BCS Championship at Sportsbook.com.
Florida Gators – A four-loss 2007 season wasn’t unexpected as the Gators returned just two defensive starters from their national championship team. This year the defense will be fast, more experienced, and it will get a boost from some new faces. Florida boasts two of the best offensive weapons in the country in Heisman Trophy winning QB Tim Tebow and do-it-all wide receiver Percy Harvin. The Gators could actually have a running game outside of Tebow with USC transfer Emmanuel Moody. Teams will continue to hit Tebow every chance they get because they know Florida isn’t the same team without him. Urban Meyer is going to have to keep scheming to make sure his QB stays healthy. It all depends on how much the defense has improved for the Gators as the winner of the Georgia/Florida game will likely wind up in the BCS title game. Bet Florida at 5-1 odds to win the BCS Championship at Sportsbook.com.
Ohio State Buckeyes – You can chalk the Buckeyes up for at least an 11-1 season in 2008. A matchup at USC on September 13th could decide if Ohio State makes its third straight title game. With Heisman Trophy candidate, running back, Chris “Beanie” Wells, efficient QB Todd Boeckman, and Defensive Player of the Year candidate James Laurinaitis, the Buckeyes look to be in good shape. 20 starters return in all and the Bucks landed highly touted recruit QB Terrelle Pryor. The Buckeyes have been spanked by Florida and LSU in each of the past two title games. There’s a good chance they make it back so they are going to have to be better against the conference highly regarded as the nation’s best. Bet Ohio State at 4-1 odds to win the BCS Championship at Sportsbook.com.
USC Trojans – It seems as if the Trojans are due to get back to the BCS title game after stubbing their toe each of the past two seasons. Pete Carroll still has more talent than any other coach in the nation with four potential All-Americans on defense. If defense does win championships, USC should win one this year. Linebackers Rey Maualuga and Brian Cushing are the best duo in the country. Even with a lesser touted signal caller, USC should run the table in the Pac-10. If they beat Ohio State at home early in the season, they will be in the title game again. Bet USC at 7-2 odds to win the BCS Championship at Sportsbook.com.
Oklahoma Sooners – Oklahoma has one national title this decade and has played for two others. Bob Stoops has another team capable of getting back in 2008. Oklahoma has struggled in postseason play though, losing their last four BCS Bowls, and that has overshadowed the fact that they have gotten their in the first place. QB Sam Bradford had a monster season in 2007 and the defense will be nasty again. I think Oklahoma has enough talent to float the losses of three key juniors to the NFL draft. If the SEC power schools beat up on each other, Stoops will get a chance at another title. Bet Oklahoma at 5-1 odds to win the BCS Championship at Sportsbook.com.
Missouri Tigers – The Tigers are for real with Heisman Trophy finalist Chase Daniel leading the way. The long-struggling team was a win away from the BCS title game a season ago and the path will go through Oklahoma again. The offense is as explosive as they come and the defense will also be a strength with nine starters returning. Safety William Moore is a special player on that side of the ball. Mizzou is a legit Big 12 and national championship contender, but like Georgia, it will have to beat a tough schedule. The Tigers have a tough opener with Illinois and have to make trips to Texas and Nebraska. If Mizzou gets out of there unscathed, they could be well on their way to making history. Bet Mizzou at 15-1 odds to win the BCS Championship at Sportsbook.com.
